Meet the man who struggles against Reliance Energy:Sandeep Ohri
This is a classic David versus Goliath story.
Sandeep Ohri, a Mumbai-based chartered accountant, recalls the time — in 2006 — when he was looking after his father’s packaging business and talks about his battle with Reliance Energy and other power regulators.
Ohri had a godown for which the electricity bill was normally around Rs 400 a month. In October 2006, he received a bill for Rs 10,800 for the usage of 14 units of power. Overnight, Reliance Energy had changed slab rates. And this was right after the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission had announced its new tariffs.
But Ohri’s was not an isolated case.

Dreamworks closes 1st phase of financing for R-ADAG
Anil Dhirubhai Ambani, chairman of the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, the parent company of Reliance Big Entertainment and Reliance BIG Pictures along with Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider, the principal partners of DreamWorks Studios jointly announced today the completion of the first phase of funding for their new motion picture company, based in Los Angeles, California. They further announced that J.P.
Morgan Securities arranged the syndication of approximately $325 million of senior debt which Reliance Big Entertainment is matching with its equity commitment. The Walt Disney Studios, who will handle marketing and distribution for the studio, will also extend a loan to DreamWorks as part of the distribution deal.

MERC stays Reliance Energy’s increased tariff hike
The 27 lakh consumers of the Anil Ambani led Reliance Infrastructure would breathe a sigh of relief for the time being as the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has ordered a stay on the increased tariff hike till further orders. This means that the consumers would have to pay their electricity bills as per the already existing tariff rates.
The MERC had approved the increase in tariff proposed by the Reliance through its order dated June 15. Soon there after there was a hue and cry with violent agitations against power tariff hike by Reliance Infrastructure, by various political parties.

BJP to hold protest rally against Reliance energy to immediate rollback of tariff hike
BJP today joined its ally Shiv Sena in protesting increase in power tariff and said the party would hold a protest rally tomorrow to demand immediate rollback of the hike.
Charging the Reliance Energy with making profit, BJP Mumbai president Gopal Shetty told reporters that the hike in power tariff was unwarranted.
He said his party would hold protest rally tomorrow to demand immediate rollback of the tariff hike.

Reliance Energy Prepared proactive action plan for Monsoon
Reliance Energy, the power distribution arm of the infrastructure giant, Reliance Infrastructure Limited (RInfra) is ready for the forthcoming monsoon.
The monsoon is already onset in the southern part of the country and is expected to reach the city in next few days. Considering the prevailing geographical and infrastructural conditions in company’s licensed distribution area, as reported in various sections in media at large over last few days, Reliance Energy has initiated a proactive action plan to meet requirements arising out of various situations during monsoon, such as water logging, power failures, electrical shocks, sparking, fire, etc. to minimize inconvenience to the consumers. As a part of Company’s proactive action plan, consumers’ safety has been given a top priority. The Company, as a part of its safety operations to ensure consumers’ safety, may have to resort to the Safety Switch Offs in a particular area, in case the water logging in that particular area threatens danger to the installations at consumers’ premises, such as substations, meter cabins, etc. as well as Company’s installations such as transformers, mini pillars on roads, etc. Further, although the water recedes in that particular area, Company will ensure safety of every installation first, be it at consumers’ premises or Company’s own, before restoring the power supply and awarding normalcy.

Google partners Indias Reliance Energy for online consumption tracking
Internet search giant Google has partnered with Reliance Energy to offer online consumption tracking facility to consumers of the power distribution firm.
The new application ‘Google Power Meter’, allows consumers to check electricity consumption with information from utility meters and energy management devices.
Over the past several months, we have been looking to partner with utilities who are installing (or have already installed) this equipment (that allows tracking of consumption)in their customers’ homes, a Google spokesperson told media.

Supreme Court upholds Tata Power-BEST deal, imposes penalty on Reliance Energy
The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the power purchase agreement between Tata Power Company (TPC) and BEST, a public sector unit, for electricity allocation in Mumbai.
The order clears the way for the supply of 800 MW by TPC to Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) as per the power purchase deal between the two entities.
A Bench headed by Justice S B Sinha, while allowing the pleas of TPC and BEST, also imposed a penalty of Rs one lakh on Reliance Energy for each of the six petitions filed by TPC and BEST against the Anil Ambani group firm and Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC).

Supreme Court puts stay on tariff ruling against Reliance Energy
The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the order of a tribunal asking Reliance Energy Ltd to refund additional electricity charges of at least Rs250 crore levied on Mumbai multiplexes and shopping malls.
A bench headed by justice B.N. Agrawal ordered that the money would not be refunded to the commercial consumers until the final disposal of the case.
Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Reliance, said that unless the order was stayed, pending adjudication of the case, the company would have to collect funds from regular consumers.

Reliance again petitions court over Brakel allotment
With the Himachal government having decided to go ahead with signing of an implementation agreement for execution of a 960 MW project to Brakel Corporation NV, a Dutch company; Reliance Energy, a rival for the project has petitioned the court a second time, saying that agreement terms stand violated.
Overcoming serious differences about allotting the mega hydropower to an upstart company, the Himachal cabinet last month finally gave its nod for continuing with the agreements for the Jhangi-Thopan-Powari project on Satluj River with Brakel.
