Dhirubhai Ambani school team wins Bournvita quiz contest

Which Indian holds the world record for catches in Test cricket? Who is the only Prime Minister who was the governor of the RBI? Which is the oldest National Park of Assam? Which is the only planet where the sun rises in the west and sets in the east? These were some of the questions quizmaster Derek O’ Brien asked the finalists of the Cadbury Bournvita Confident Minds contest on Thursday. Vying for the top prize were six Mumbai teams representing their schools. After four rounds - confident looker, confident speaker, confident thinker and confident team - Dhirubhai Ambani International School won the grand prize.

Winners Kartik Sabharwal(13), Pranav Mehta(12), Bhuvan Patel(11) and Vedant Jain(11) said it was the extensive school library and friendly librarians who helped them achieve this. They also give credit to the morning current affairs discussions they have with their classmates and teacher during a 15-minute registration period. “I make a conscious effort to make note of every little bit of information I see or read, says Sabhawwal. Their English and History teacher Sunita Nath was present at the contest venue. Ask her how her students won and she says it is the regular intra-school quizzes that made them ready. “Students prepare quizzes for their classmates themselves, says Nath. “This gives them exposure on how to create a quiz, think of smart questions and current topics. This way they can anticipate what the quizmaster will ask.

Rustomjee Cambridge International School were first runners-up while St Gregorious School claimed the third spot. Gregorious student Hriday Gupta has a mini-library of quiz books, encyclopaedias, CDs and DVDs at home from where he practised for the quiz. His teacher at Gregorious, Sita Lakshmi who started the GK club with the principal’s guidance was there to cheer her students.

Brien was in his usual quizzing avatar. In one round, participants were given four words around which they had to weave a plot. Salman, shirt, bucket and coins were the words given to the winning team who managed to write and present a story that impressed Brien the most.
