Reliance Mobile user base increases to 1.11 crore subscribers
Monthly addition in the GSM (global system for mobile communications) subscriber base touched a record 10.84 million in March, despite the economic slowdown. And experts suggest that growth in user numbers would increase even further.
According to TV Ramachandran, director general of the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the monthly GSM subscriber addition could touch as much as 15 million some time this year.
If this growth trend continues, the mobile subscriber base would touch the 400-million mark as early as the end of this month.
As of end-February, the mobile user base was 376.12 million. There were a total of 413.85 million phone subscribers and the teledensity was at 35.65% at the end of February.
Mobile phone players, mainly Aircel and Idea Cellular, are expanding their operations, and therefore subscriber numbers have shot up, explain analysts. The expansion spree would continue for some months, they add.
Ramachandran pointed out that the last month of the financial year is usually boom time in terms of telecom subscriber growth as companies try to push for expansion and new launches.
The all-India GSM user base has now increased to 288.3 million, up from 277.5 million at the end of February. The GSM figures do not include the growth in Reliance subscribers.
The CDMA (code division multiple access) subscriber data for March is yet to be announced.
While GSM players include Bharti, Vodafone, BSNL, Idea and Aircel, CDMA firms are mainly Reliance Communications and Tata Teleservices. Reliance operates in both CDMA and GSM platforms.
Bharti Airtel is the leading mobile telephony player with 93.9 million subscribers and a 32.57% GSM market share. Vodafone has the second largest GSM base at 68.7 million, followed by BSNL at 46.6 million, Idea 43 million, Aircel 18.4 million.
