Reliance Retail has announced that it will form a joint venture with UK-based supply chain specialist Wincanton, which will service its food, supermarket and hypermarket businesses. Reliance said the synergies from the venture will enable it to efficiently run its back-end operations.
The move may be prompted by the rapid growth of Reliance Retail since its launch two years ago, which has put tremendous pressure on its supply chain. Wincanton, a $4bn supply chain solution provider, is expected to completely take over the supply chain, find the right warehouses for goods and transport them in correct order to Reliance Retail stores.
The move is yet another in a string of recent alliances announced by Reliance, following deals with Pearle Europe (to open optical stores), Hamleys (toy stores), and Marks & Spencer (apparel).
